Maria Elena Salinas Receives the Distinguished International Scholar Award and is Honored as a Dean’s Speaker at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University
Miami, FL -- On March 21, 2002 María Elena Salinas, co-anchor of Noticiero Univision, addressed the student body and special guests of the Goizueta Business School at Emory University as a Dean’s Speaker during a special ceremony in which she received the Distinguished International Scholar Award in recognition of her 20-year career as an outstanding broadcast professional.
The Dean’s Speaker Series at Goizueta Business School is an academic forum where leaders share their knowledge with students regarding key public issues, their roles within their organizations, and how their work affects the greater community. This shared real-world wisdom is an essential part of training productive, principled business leaders for the future.
Participation in the Dean’s Speaker series is one of the Goizueta Business School’s most prestigious academic distinctions and places Salinas among an elite group of professionals including Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway; former US President and Emory faculty member, Jimmy Carter; John Connors, CFO of Microsoft; Doug Daft, CEO of Coca-Cola; and Leonard Lauder, Chairman and CEO of The Estee Lauder Company. Salinas is the first Hispanic honored as a Dean’s Speaker, and the first recipient of the Distinguished International Scholar Award.
As a journalist, María Elena Salinas has excelled in her coverage of issues that affect the U.S. Hispanic community. Her in-depth reporting on topics such as immigration reform have garnered her the recognition of government officials and immigration rights activists as well as the television viewing audience. She was honored with two national Emmy Awards for her special coverage of Hurricane Mitch and has appeared on the covers of “Latin Leaders” and “Hispanic Business,” in which she was listed as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the nation.
Salinas has been the keynote speaker at various media conferences and business events. She is a founding member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and is widely recognized for her work mentoring and guiding young Hispanics who aspire to a career in journalism.
As co-anchors of Univision’s award-winning national newscast, which is broadcast nationwide Monday through Friday (6:30 p.m./5:30 Central), María Elena Salinas and Jorge Ramos are the most-watched, most-popular news anchor team on Hispanic television.
