Univision 23 Wins Prestigious Journalism Award
Noticias 23 Garners Top Award from Florida - Associated Press
Miami, FL -- APRIL 17, 2006 - Univision 23’s investigative news story “Sacerdote, Amante y Espía,” (Priest, Lover and Spy) recently won first prize in the large market television investigative category of the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters contest.
The production team for “Sacerdote, Amante y Espia” included Helga Silva, Executive Producer; Mario Vallejo, Reporter; and Manolo Rodriguez, Chief Editor. Univision 23 was the only Spanish-language television station nominated for a prize in the state contest. Univision 23 Vice President, General Manager Luis Fernandez-Rocha said, “It is a great honor for Univision 23 to be chosen as a winner in a predominantly English-language contest, among dozens of English-language stations. The award recognizes the stations exceptional news coverage in Florida’s culturally diverse community.”
The news series tells the tale of Raquel Norbert, a secret agent for the Cuban government who became the lover of a beloved Miami priest, Manuel Antonio de Jesus Ortega Hernandez, in order to fulfill his role as a Cuban spy.
“This story took us to three different countries to verify and break the code of silence surrounding a priest whose image many wanted to keep intact,” said Helga Silva, Vice President of News for Univision 23 and Telefutura 69 and the executive producer of this project. “I am proud of Mario Vallejo’s investigation and Manolo Rodriguez’ keen and sensitive vision that brought the images together.”
After remaining untold for decades, reporter Mario Vallejo uncovered the story by conducting interviews with Raquel Norbert, where she opened up to Vallejo and shared the secrets of her life with the recognized Miami priest.
