Univision-23 Special Garners Prestigious Murrow Award
“Mariel 25” documentary acquires prestigious honor
Miami, FL -- “Mariel 25,” an hour-long documentary, produced by Univision 23 was awarded a regional Edward R. Murrow Award, by the Radio and Television News Director’s Association (RTNDA), the national organization announced this week.
The production team for “Mariel 25” included Helga Silva, Executive Producer; Leticia Herrera-Gonzalez, Co-Executive Producer; Pablo Perdomo, Producer; and Manuel Rodriguez, Editor.
In April of 1980, the face of Miami changed forever as thousands of Cubans left Mariel behind and embarked on a treacherous journey to South Florida, with the hope of finding a better life. “Mariel 25” aired on Univision 23 in April 2005. The emotional, 50-minute documentary dramatically portrayed the difficult journey of those who were trying to make it to the United States, with heart-breaking testimonials of the dramatic exodus. The film also featured uplifting stories of those who went on to great success in the U.S., as well as the tragic tales of those who never made it to the land of freedom.
The RTNDA has been honoring outstanding achievement in electronic journalism with the Murrow Awards since 1971. Earlier this month, 28 radio and television news managers from markets across the country spent three days judging the entries. Regional winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition, which will be judged in early June. The national Edward R. Murrow Awards will be presented on October 16 at a dinner in New York.
The RTNDA, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, is the world’s largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. RTNDA represents local and network news professionals in broadcasting, cable and other electronic media in more than 30 countries.
This is the second major award Univision 23 has received for its moving documentary “Mariel 25.” In January the documentary was awarded with a Silver World Medal at the International Television Programming & Promotion Awards.
