Univision 23 Wins National Award for Community Service
Miami, FL -- Univision 23 was recently honored with the National Association of Broadcasters’ Service to Children Award. The award recognizes broadcast stations for outstanding programs, campaigns and public service announcements produced for the benefit of children. This is the Miami stations second Service to America Award, marking the first time a television station ever this award has been presented twice to.
“We are truly honored to receive the National Broadcasters’ award for service to children. Univision 23 has been committed to helping the children of South Florida for many years and it is great to see that this commitment is being recognized,” said Luis Fernandez-Rocha, Vice President, General Manager, Univision 23 and Telefutura 69.
Univision 23 was selected nationwide to receive the 2006 Service to Children Award for it’s special programming aimed at improving children’s lives through campaigns such as “Club de Libros 23” (Channel 23 Book Club), “Por Amor a los Niños” (For Love of Our Children), “Alcanzando el Exito Escolar” (Reaching Scholastic Success) and a campaign that provides families of children with disabilities access to information about resources to improve their quality of life.
“Club de Libros 23” is a news segment featured every Monday on the Noticias-23 morning newscast “Al Amanecer”. Education reporter María Fernanda Lopez visits different schools weekly throughout the school year to promote reading in Spanish to bilingual students in South Florida. In addition, as part of the partnership, Santillana USA donates books to the participating schools.
“Por Amor a Los Niños,” a team effort between Univision 23 and The Children’s Trust, features South Florida children in search of adoptive parents. The children’s profiles are aired on the Univision 23 weekend newscast and Univision 23’s and Telefutura 69’s community affairs show, “Miami Ahora” (Miami Now).
Univision 23’s education special “Alcanzando el Exito Escolar” highlights the keys to success in school and the importance of obtaining a high school diploma. News anchor Alina Mayo-Azze hosted the special along with the campaign, which focused on improving the high dropout rate in South Florida.
Univision 23 regularly airs a public service campaign focusing on improving the quality of life and learning for children with disabilities and their families. The campaign, a team effort between the station and the National Information Center for Children with Disabilities, provides resource information for the families of children with disabilities, ranging from attention deficit disorder to autism. Members of the Univision 23 team received the award in a special ceremony for the winners held Monday, June 12 at the Ritz Carlton in Washington D.C.
