Univision 23 Enhances Commitment to Education with Debut of First Spanish Language Education Reporter in the Market
Univision 23 kicks off back- to- school season with new reporter, ten special education reports and a 30-minute special aimed at keeping kids in school
Miami, FL -- Univision 23 strengthens its commitment to education with an array of new initiatives. As Back-to-School season begins, Noticias 23 will debut a series of in-depth education reports by the station’s new education reporter -- the only Spanish-language reporter dedicated to covering these issues on TV -- Maria Fernanda López.
Maria Fernanda, a native of Cali, Colombia, has been working for Noticias 23 as a reporter and anchor for the last two years. She graduated with honors from Cali’s Universidad Autonoma de Occidente and has worked as a reporter in both the U.S. and Colombia for the last eight years. Noticias 23 News Director Helga Silva said, “We were very impressed with Maria Fernanda’s work and we hand-picked her for this newly-created position because she possesses the knowledge, energy and compassion needed to cover education news.”
Maria Fernanda’s in-depth education news reports, airing at 6 p.m. on Univision 23, debut with ten special back-to-school reports that will air from August 1st through August 12th: Beginning the week of August 15th, the education reports will air on a weekly basis on Noticias 23.
In addition, on August 20th at 10 a.m., Univision 23 will air, “Making the Grade” (Alcanzando el Éxito Escolar), a morning special aimed at keeping students in school. Hosted by Alina Mayo-Azze, the half-hour program will outline all of the resources offered by the school district to students who are at risk of dropping out of high school. The program will feature interviews with teachers, counselors, psychologists and other education experts, who will talk about the importance of education and explain the all of the programs that are available to at-risk students.
Parents play key roles in a child’s successful education, and this special will teach them how to identify behaviors that are frequently exhibited by students who are at risk of dropping out of school. The special will also give parents the tools to help guide their children through each stage of their education, from kindergarten through high school graduation. Additionally, the program will feature ‘real life’ stories of previously at-risk students, as well as South Florida job recruiters, whose job it is to look for qualified workers.
