First Annual “Premios Juventud” Awards Show Turns into Star-Studded Party

Univision’s “Youth Awards” very unique dance club setting was the perfect venue for a parade of stars, and sensational performances by Paulina Rubio, Juanes, Jennifer Peña and Akwid, among others

Miami, FL -- Hispanic viewers enjoyed their very own celebrity-filled, rhythm-packed party this Thursday night when the Univision Network presented the first ever “Premios Juventud” (“Youth Awards”) ceremony, which aired LIVE from Miami at 9pm ET/PT (8pm Central/Mountain).

The first awards show on Spanish language television in which young Hispanics honor their favorite Latin stars, “Premios Juventud 2004” gave awards in 22 innovative categories. Among the night’s biggest winners were Mexican superstar Thalía, with three statuettes (“Party Starter,” “Dream Chic,” and “My Idol Is”), and Puerto Rican hearthrob Chayanne, who also won three awards (“He’s Got Style,” “He’s So Hot,” and “Best Moves”). Other takers included Jennifer López (“”She’s Totally Red Carpet” and “Paparazzi’s Favorite Target”), popular Banda group Liberación (“Catchiest Tune” and “Best Re-Mix”), famous baseball shortstop Alex Rodríguez (“Hottest Male Athlete”), and Colombian pop idol Juanes (“Dynamic Duet” for his recent duo with Nelly Furtado). Pop music sensation Paulina Rubio took home one of the night’s most important awards, “All Over the Dial”, which recognizes the hottest recording artist of the moment.

An enormous, cutting-edge stage with a dance club theme –including a “VIP lounge” area where invited celebrities sat and a “DJ booth” manned by popular L.A. disc jockey Argelia Atilano – served as the backdrop for a truly special evening. The show opened with the spectacular air, land and sea arrivals of its three “mystery hosts,” whose names had not been not revealed. Hollywood star Cristian de la Fuente rappelled onstage after arriving on a helicopter; Univision Network’s popular host Myrka Dellanos made her grand entrance on a motorcycle; and lively Galavisión personality Galilea Montijo came by boat, carrying a briefcase containing the CD that got the party started. Then things really kicked into gear with a festive production number featuring Paulina Rubio performing her latest party tune, “Dame un Tequila”. Later, multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter Juanes brought the house down with his latest #1 hit single, “Nada Valgo sin tu Amor” (I’m Worthless Without Your Love), singing it for the first time ever before a live audience. Jennifer Peña, Kumbia Kings, and the duo formed by Aleks Synteks and Ana Torroja were among the other A-list recording artists who performed for “Premios Juventud.” In addition, a sensational medley by banda/rap group Akwid, reggae/rap star Ivy Queen and merengue/rap kings Fulanito took the audience on a rhythmic tour of the unique sounds of Spanish-language hip-hop.

Another highlight of the festivities was when the Univision Network’s news anchor Jorge Ramos presented three scholarships to deserving Hispanic youngsters in the areas of Music, Sports and Academic Excellence. There was also a musical tribute to famous Mexican singer/songwriter José José, who received the special “Idol of Generations” award.

Among the many Hispanic stars arriving by boat to walk down the “Premios Juventud” riverside red carpet were: Sofía Vergara, Karyme Lozano, Rafael Amaya, Kate del Castillo, Niurka Marcos and Bobby Larios, Amelia Vega (Miss Universe 2003), Valentino Lanus, Aracely Arámbula, José José, Julieta Venegas, AB Quintanilla, Shalim and many more. Mexican singer Alicia Villarreal opened the “Red Carpet” event with a rousing performance from a catamaran docked at the Miami River. The “Red Carpet” portion of the show aired one hour before the awards ceremony as a special titled “Noche de Estrellas” (Night of Stars).

All of the night’s winners were chosen by enthusiastic fans voting on Univision.com, the exclusive home of Premios Juventud online.  Fans logged onto Univision.com to follow the action and get the inside scoop.  Univision.com post coverage will include winner profiles, behind-the-scenes photos, celebrity gossip, and an up close look at who ruled the red carpet.
