Univision Recognized for HIV/AIDS PSAs; TeleFutura Honored For Outstanding Original Programming

New York, NY -- Univision was named Network of the Year at Cable Positive’s 7th annual POP (Positively Outstanding Programming) Awards held in New York City last night. Additionally, Univision and TeleFutura won POP Awards for best Original Spanish-language Programming and Best Original Spanish-Language Public Service Announcement (PSA). The other networks nominated were MTV and Retirement living. The POP Awards are held annually by Cable Positive, to recognize cable networks and programming for creating television that carries educational value and promotes awareness/prevention in the fight against HIV/AIDS

“Latinos represent a growing portion of new HIV infections, making Univision vital to the fight against HIV/AIDS among Spanish speaking communities,” said Steve Villano, president & chief executive officer, Cable Positive.  “Tonight’s POP Award – of Network of the Year in HIV/AIDS-related programming – recognizes the significant and growing commitment of Univision to the cause of fighting HIV/AIDS.  Univision stands as a powerful example of corporate social responsibility for other media companies to follow.”

Univision’s “Salud es Vida… Entérate” (Lead a Healthy Life… Get the Facts) won the award in the PSA category for its HIV/AIDS awareness campaign. TeleFutura’s “Así es la Vida” (That’s Life), won for a five-part storyline dealing with the issue of safe-sex practices entitled “Con Dominio Total.” Both winning entries were developed in collaboration with the Kaiser Family Foundation.

“We are honored to be recognized by Cable Positive for Univision’s commitment to inform, educate and empower the Hispanic community,” said Tonia O’Connor, executive vice president, Distribution Sales and Marketing, Univision Communications Inc. “Univision is the champion of Hispanic America and through awareness efforts like ‘Salud es Vida… Entérate’ we are committed to leveraging all of our assets across TV, radio and online, to delivering crucial information on health, including HIV/AIDS.”

“Salud es Vida…ˇEntérate!” is a national effort designed to raise awareness, increase knowledge and encourage positive health decision-making. The initiative utilizes Univision’s diverse media assets across its television, radio and online platforms to educate its audience on health issues and promote primary prevention, habits of healthy living, access to care and disease-specific prevention and treatment. Launched in 2001, the “Entérate” HIV/AIDS campaign provides viewers with information and resources on HIV/AIDS, the facts on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and related issues. The campaign co-produces PSAs for the Univision and TeleFutura Networks (and cable network Galavisión), as well as provides free print and web-based resources available at www.univision.com (keyword: Entérate) and through the campaign's toll-free hotline (1-866-TU SALUD).

Cable Positive is dedicated to mobilizing the talents, resources, access and influence of the cable and telecommunications industry to raise HIV/AIDS awareness; support HIV/AIDS education, prevention and care; and strive to end stigma by creating a more compassionate climate for people whose lives have been affected by HIV or AIDS. Cable Positive was founded in February 1992 by three concerned cable executives, Jeffrey Bernstein, then with Request Television, Brad Wojcoski of HBO and June Winters, with the mission of organizing cable's resources in the fight against AIDS.
