Maria Elena Salinas to be Inducted into Hall of Fame of National Association of Hispanic Journalists
New York, NY -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) will induct Emmy-award winning journalist Maria Elena Salinas into the association’s Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 17, during its annual convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Celebrating her 25th anniversary with Univision this year, Salinas is one of the most prominent and recognized Hispanic female journalists in the United States. She is co-anchor of the highly rated “Noticiero Univision” (Univision News).
In addition to establishing a broadcast scholarship in her name for student journalists pursuing careers in Spanish-language media, Salinas is a founding member of NAHJ and formerly served as its vice president. NAHJ’s Hall of Fame honors journalists whose efforts have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation’s Latino community.
Throughout the years, Maria Elena Salinas has handled some of the most challenging assignments in journalism reaching millions of Hispanics across the U.S. and Latin America. She has reported from the White House to the Kremlin, from earthquake-ravaged to war torn streets. Salinas also moderated the first bilingual Presidential Democratic candidate debate in the U.S.
Her insightful coverage of global news stories has helped “Noticiero Univision” win two national Emmys as well as an Edward R. Murrow award. Additionally, she is a syndicated columnist on U.S. Hispanic issues and Latin America. Her weekly articles appear in English and Spanish in more than 45 daily newspapers across the country. Salinas was awarded the 2006 Premio Orgullo, or Pride Award, in celebration of her dedication to the Hispanic community. Her advocacy work includes voter registration initiatives, youth mentoring, and immigration reform. Her first book, a memoir, was published in April 2006 with the title, I Am My Father's Daughter: Living a Life Without Secrets.
“Noticiero Univision” airs Monday through Friday, 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm ET/PT (5:30 pm to 6 pm Central/Mountain Time).
