Univision 41 to Air Special on Mental Illness

New York, NY -- As part of Univision’s Peabody award winning campaign, Salud es Vida…Entérate! (Lead a Healthy Life…Get the Facts!), Univision 41 (WXTV) will air a half-hour special on mental conditions that particularly affect U.S. Hispanics. Hosted by Univision Network news anchor Carmen Dominicci, the special “Enfoque…Su Salud Mental” (Focus…Your Mental Health) will air Saturday, June 25th at 10 a.m. This special will feature medical experts who will define the symptoms of various mental illnesses, treatments available, and will highlight organizations and community centers that provide resources and assistance.

According to a recent study from the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, Latinos are identified as a high-risk group for depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

Regrettably, fewer than one in eleven Latinos contact mental health care specialists; this number is higher among newly arrived immigrants. Studies have also found that young Latinos experience proportionately more anxiety-related and delinquency problem behaviors and depression than do non-Hispanic white youth. In the U.S. today, one in ten children suffer from a mental disorder severe enough to cause some level of impairment. The special will also feature interviews with patients suffering from mental illness, and how the treatment they are currently receiving has helped.

Mental illness includes conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and panic attacks, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. At the end of the special, “Enfoque…Su Salud Mental” will provide viewers with national resources and toll free hotlines where they can call for assistance and information on programs for these treatable disorders.  Additional information will also be available on Entérate’s webpage by logging onto www.univision.net, keyword: Enterate.
