Univision’s Acclaimed Evening News Co-Anchor María Elena Salinas Nominated for 2006 National Emmy for “Outstanding Interview”

Nomination for Exclusive Special Interview “Setting the Record Straight”

New York, NY -- The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recently announced that María Elena Salinas, co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision,” Univision Network’s highly rated evening news program, was nominated for a national News and Documentary Emmy for “Outstanding Interview.” The winners will be announced at a ceremony on September 25, 2006 in New York City.

Salinas is nominated for “Setting the Record Straight,” an exclusive special interview with Raúl Salinas de Gortari, the controversial brother of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. She secured an interview with de Gortari immediately following his release from a 10-year prison sentence. The interview was a special report for Univision’s weekly primetime news magazine, “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) broadcast in June 2005.

“I am proud of Maria Elena and the group for their national Emmy nomination. It is very gratifying to be recognized alongside our English-language news peers for our journalistic excellence,” says Sylvia Rosabal-Ley, Vice President and Co-Director of News, Univision. “The recognition stands as a testament to Univision’s commitment to presenting the type of in-depth news coverage and compelling interviews that matter most to our viewers.”

The Univision Network is the only Spanish-language network to be awarded a national Emmy. Salinas, who will also be presenting at the September 25th ceremony, has previously been awarded two national Emmy’s and one regional.

Other nominations for “Outstanding Interview” include CBS Evening News’ “First Man;” NBC’s Meet the Press for “Hurricane Katrina;” as well as ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” for an interview with Patrick Gray.
