Univision’s Fernando Arau, María Elena Salinas and Cristina Saralegui to Receive Honorary Emmys for Leadership in Spanish-Language Television

New York, NY -- The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences yesterday announced the 2006 recipients of the “Leaders in Spanish-Language Television” Awards, which included Univision’s Fernando Arau, co-host of “Despierta América” (Wake Up America); María Elena Salinas, co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision” (Univision Network News); and Cristina Saralegui, host of “El Show De Cristina”. The awards recognize professionals who have made significant contributions to the growth and quality of Spanish-language television in the U.S. This year’s awards will be presented on October 19, 2006, at the Time Life Building in New York City.

As co-host of the longest-running and most successful morning show on Spanish-language television, Fernando Arau adds a dose of priceless comic relief to “Despierta América.” He has served as co-anchor of the morning show since it started in 1997.  He is a talented artist and comedian who, throughout his 24-year career, has also served as producer, director and actor.

A veteran journalist, María Elena Salinas is the Emmy-award winning co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision.” She is one of the most respected female journalists in the United States.  For 25 years, Salinas has handled some of the most challenging assignments in modern day journalism and reached an audience of millions of Hispanics across the nation. Salinas also co-hosts “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now), Univision’s weekly primetime newsmagazine, and “Noticias Univision Presenta” (Univision News Presents) news specials broadcast several times per year on a major topic. She published her first book in April 2006, I am My Father’s Daughter: Living a Life Without Secrets.

A highly successful host, Cristina Saralegui has more than 30 years of journalistic experience and is widely recognized as a leading role model for today’s Hispanic woman. She hosts the most popular and boldest talk show on Spanish-language television, “El Show de Cristina.” Saralegui also hosts Univision’s quarterly specials “Soñando Contigo,” heartwarming programs where an extreme life transformation makes one deserving person’s impossible dream, possible.
