A TV First: Gotham’s Top Rated Prime Time Network Speaks Spanish –Univision is First Spanish Net to Win NY Ratings Race
New York, NY -- In an historic upset, a Spanish-language TV network has won New York’s prime time weekday ratings race for an entire, four-week survey period according to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) local people meter (LPM) ratings for the August 2005 survey (July 28 through August 24, 2005).
According to NSI LPM figures for the 8 pm to 11 pm time period weekdays, Univision’s New York station, WXTV Channel 41, was the station most watched by adults aged 18 to 49 and 25 to 54 regardless of language during the August 2005 survey period. An average of 203,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 watched Univision each quarter hour according to Nielsen. CBS placed second with an average quarter hour audience of 185,000 persons aged 18 to 49. NBC ran third with 172,000, and ABC followed with 163,000. Among those aged 25 to 54 Univision attracted 230,000 viewers on average. 207,000 watched second place CBS. 197,000 watched third place NBC, and 178,000 watched fourth place ABC. It is the first time that a Spanish-language TV station has ever been number one in prime time in the nation’s number one TV market.
Viewers aged 18 to 49 and 25 to 54 are the two most targeted audience categories by advertisers in broadcast television.
The good ratings news for Univision is not confined to its prime time programming. In New York, the 6 pm local news on WXTV runs a close second to competing local news on WABC-TV Channel 7, the ABC-owned station. “Noticias Univision 41” (Univision 41 News) with anchors Rafael Pineda and Denisse Oller, was watched by an average of 102,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 during the August survey period. Among those aged 25 to 54 130,000 watched the Univision news program. For WABC-TV’s news, the figures are 114,000 and 141,000 respectively. With more than 33 years in the WXTV anchor chair, Rafael Pineda is the New York TV market’s most senior news anchorman.
The final day of the August survey period, Wednesday August 24, saw a Univision program, the novela “La Madrastra” (The Stepmother) emerge as New York’s top-rated prime time TV program with 352,000 viewers aged 18-49 and 361,000 viewers aged 25-54. The 6 pm and 11 pm broadcasts of “Noticias Univision 41” also led their respective news races among those aged 18 to 49 with 167,000 and 158,000 viewers respectively, beating competing news programs on ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox owned stations.
