Univision KTVW 33 Wins National Awards
Ruben Pereida, Local News Reporter, and Steve Aron, Photojournalist, Receive Prestigious Award from the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals; Mario Barraza, Photojournalist, Receives National Accolade by National Association of Hispanic Journalists
Phoenix, AZ -- KTVW Univision 33, Arizona’s Spanish-language television leader, is pleased to announce that several of its award-winning news team members have been selected as recipients of two national awards. Ruben Pereida, local news reporter, and Steve Aron, photojournalist, have been selected as national recipients of the esteemed Gabriel Award® for Spanish Language Religious (National or Local) TV Release from the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals. Mario Barraza, photojournalist, has been selected as recipient of the Videography Feature Award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). KTVW Univision 33’s winning entry for the Gabriel Award® was the epic, five-part report, "Kino: El Legado en Nuestra Tierra" (Kino: The Legacy in Our Land), which chronicled the travels of the famed Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Catholic priest who became famous in what is now Arizona and Sonora, Mexico, for the methods he used to Christianize the indigenous Native American population, establishing over 20 missions and chapels throughout the territory, as well as creating relationships between indigenous peoples and the religious institutions he represented. Father Kino was also an expert astronomer, mathematician and cartographer, who drew the first accurate maps of Pimería Alta, the Gulf of California and Baja California. All of these accomplishments were faithfully depicted in Univision 33’s special report, making it an ideal recipient of the respected Gabriel Award®.
KTVW Univision 33, represented by Pereida and Aron, will receive the award at the 2008 Gabriel Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 25, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, in Los Angeles, California. This is the second occasion that Univision 33 receives this prestigious award. In 2004, Univision 33 was also selected as a winner for "Fe Católica: Restaurando La Fe” (Catholic Faith: Restoring the Faith), and in 2005, received a Certificate of Merit for “Caravana de la Libertad" (Freedom Riders).
The Gabriel Awards are designed to honor works of excellence in film, network and cable television and radio programs, recognizing the best in broadcasting and film that uplifts the human spirit. KTVW Univision 33’s winning entry for the NAHJ Journalism Awards was the feature report: “Infancia Sin Patria” (Childhood Without a Country), which portrayed the dangerous perils through which children and youths have to pass in order to enter the United States illegally, and the fate that awaits many of them when returned to their native country, or, in many cases, to Mexico, where they will fall in the institutionalized care of several government dependencies. Barraza was able to capture through his lens the harrowing decisions these children must take: either risk their lives for a chance to achieve the American dream, or return home, where an adverse fate awaits them.
Barraza will be presented the award at the Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala, at the National Press Club in Washington DC on September 12th, 2008.
The awards gala recognizes and honors distinguished journalists who through their work characterize the goal of NAHJ to increase the influence of Latinos in U.S. newsrooms. The NAHJ Journalism Awards honor journalists for excellence in their specialized fields of work or for their outstanding coverage of the Latino community.
