Univision Records Regional Urban Duo Akwid, Officially Debuts in Lincoln Park and Pasadena

New Hip Hop Duo Makes First Appearance in Southland Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Woodland Hills, CA -- AKWID, the Los Angeles based duo that recently signed with Univision Records, made their official debut in front of thousands of Angelinos celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Lincoln Park and Pasadena.

Brothers Sergio and Francisco Gomez debuted with Univision Records in a radio festival that took place in Lincoln Park, where a crowd of over eight thousand people celebrated the traditional 1862 Battle of Puebla.  Following their successful performance there, they joined Univision’s Channel 34 stage in Old Town Pasadena to perform for a vibrant and fervent crowd in front of City Hall.

AKWID, whose debut album for Univision Records, Proyecto AKWID is due in stores nationwide on June 10, 2003, stirred thousands of people who attended Cinco de Mayo festivities in Lincoln Park last Sunday.  Undoubtedly, the AKWID movement has begun and the anticipation of their first musical production seems to be gaining momentum, as was evidenced by the euphoric reaction of the massive audience that welcomed them on stage to do “what many have attempted to do but only AKWID has accomplished,” fuse the incomparable sound of traditional Mexican Banda music with urban Hip Hop.

During both of their performances, those who witnessed the birth of AKWID, reacted favorably to the innovative and pioneering sound of the group, a sound that very well may be the biggest musical revolution in Latin music’s recent history.  AKWID, performing along with a traditional live wind instrument band and DJ, sang some of the tracks that comprise their upcoming album-- Pobre compa (Poor Buddy), El ausente (Missing Person), Tu mentira (Your Lie) and Es mi gusto (It’s My Pleasure).

In both instances, the energetic duo closed their sets with No hay manera (There’s No Way), the first promotional cut, which is already steadily climbing radio charts in the West Coast at an impressive rate.  The track opens with wind instrumentation and the traditional sound of Mexican Banda mixed in with urban Hip Hop background beats that accompany the classic chorus verse of Mexico’s ‘one and only’ Juan Gabriel.  The crowd’s excitement became apparent when in a unanimous chorus they sang along with AKWID before leaving the stage.

Proyecto AKWID is comprised of 14 Spanish tracks, their first professional effort in this language.  This album promises to take the Latin music industry by storm with its innovative musical propositions and its unique fusion of hip hop and traditional regional Mexican music.  Proyecto AKWID, the most ambitious Latin music proposition to date, will be in stores across the U.S. June 10, 2003.  To view part of their weekend performance, visit www.AKWID.com.
