Univision 45 Presenta Especial Educativo Para Padres de Niños con Problemas de Aprendizaje

Houston, TX -- As part of the Univision Education Initiative, and in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education, KXLN-TV Univision 45 will rebroadcast the half hour award special targeting parents of children with learning disabilities, “Retos y triunfos en el aprendizaje” (Challenges and Successes in Learning). Hosted by Univision News Anchor Neida Sandoval, the special will air on Saturday, December 7th, 2002 from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

It is estimated that one out of seven persons has a learning disability, the most common of which affect speech and reading. “Retos y triunfos en el aprendizaje” will provide parents with important information on how to navigate the educational system to help their child succeed in school. The special will describe the most effective types of treatments and educational strategies currently implemented by the school systems. It will discuss the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that gives eligible children with disabilities the right to receive special services and assistance in school.  In addition, it will discuss the diagnostic process and the evaluation and testing methods used by the schools.

“Retos y triunfos…” will deliver the message that parents are the fundamental force in raising and educating a child with disabilities to successfully handle his/her challenges. It will provide them with information on resources available to help their children realize their full potential.

In addition to the special, a public service announcement campaign will air one month following the special emphasizing its key messages.  “Retos y triunfos en el aprendizaje” is an important element of Univision’s efforts to promote educational excellence.
