Spanish-language tournament of roses parade broadcast beats NBC & ABC efforts in ratings
New York, NY -- Spanish-language TV has won New York’s War of the Roses. Yesterday, Monday, January 2, 2006, New York’s premier Spanish-language TV station, Univision 41 WXTV, drew more viewers aged 18 to 34 and 18 to 49 to its broadcast of the annual Tournament of Roses Parade than did English-language broadcasts of the parade on WNBC channel 4 and WABC-TV Channel 7. That made Univision 41 New York’s most watched TV station during the time of the parade broadcast according to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) overnight ratings. 73,000 New York area viewers aged 18 to 34 watched the Tournament of Roses Parade on Univision 41 (WXTV) from 11 am to 1:30 pm on January 2. WABC, which showed the parade from 11 am to 1 pm attracted 32,000 viewers aged 18 to 34. WNBC which carried the parade from 11 am to 12:30 pm attracted 31,000 viewers aged 18 to 34. Among those aged 18 to 49, Univision 41 attracted 135,000 viewers vs. 128,000 for WNBC and 97,000 for WABC. Meanwhile, on New Year’s Eve, an estimated 633,000 total New York area viewers saw the Times Square premiere of “Arriba, Arriba,” the theme song Univision commissioned for its 2006 World Cup Soccer broadcasts on Univision’s broadcast of “Feliz Ano 2006” (Happy New Year 2006). “Arriba, Arriba” (Higher, Higher) was performed live in Times Square just before the annual ball drop.
