Olga Alvarez y Merijoel Duran de Univision 41 ganan premio Emmy

Duran now engaged to man she met reporting story

New York, NY -- Two reporters for Univision 41 (WXTV), New York’s premier Spanish-language TV station, won coveted Emmy Awards last night at the 49th Annual New York Area Emmy Awards presentation at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

“Noticias Univision 41” weekend anchor Olga Alvarez and “Noticias Univision 41” reporter Merijoel Duran accepted Emmy statuettes for reports seen in November 2004 and May 2005.  And in a development worthy of a telenovela, the staple of Univision prime time programming, Duran is now engaged to be married to the subject of her Emmy-winning report, a man she met for the first time while reporting the story.

Duran was honored in the category, “Outstanding Multi-Part Hard News Story,” for “De Papá a Mamá” (From Father to Mother), a three part report on a man who is raising twin girls as a single parent after losing his wife in childbirth.  “De Papa a Mama” was seen on “Noticias  Univision 41” November 22 through 24, 2004.  Segment producers for the story are Alexander Bedoya, Nicole Duignan, David DiPuma, and Lourenco Blanco.  In accepting the award, Duran “let the cat out of the bag” as it were in saying, “I gained two beautiful daughters in doing this story.”

Alvarez won her Emmy in the category, “Outstanding Multi-Part News Feature,” for “Milagro Para Una Madre” (Miracle for a Mother), which was seen May 7 & 8 2005.  Segment producers are José Arturo Lopéz, Hector Moya, Alexander Bedoya, and Humberto Acosta.  “Milagro Para Una Madre” is the story of a mother whose daughter awakened from a coma miraculously after seven years of unconsciousness.

The New York Emmy Awards, presented annually by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NY TV Academy), honor excellence in television achievement throughout the State of New York and northern New Jersey.  Eligible entries were seen on New York area TV between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005.
