Saturday Win for Univision Highlights Growing NY Hispanic Influence

New York, NY -- In a precedent-shattering TV ratings development, more New Yorkers get their Saturday evening news from a Spanish-language TV broadcaster than from any other source.  A study of the 2006 New York TV ratings reveals that the 6 pm Saturday local news on Univision-owned Univision 41 (WXTV) here is the most watched early-evening news local news program on New York television among the key audience groups, adults aged 18 to 34, 18 to 49 and 25 to 54 years old.

According to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) ratings, the 6 pm Saturday “Noticias Univision 41” (Univision 41 News) has been New York’s top-rated Saturday early news program since May 2006 – for four consecutive ratings periods – the longest winning streak in the history of Spanish-language TV in New York.  That streak includes two sweep periods (May and July 2006) in which the ratings of TV stations nationwide are measured in order to set advertising rates as well as two non-sweep ratings periods, June and August 2006.

During the just-completed August 2006 (July 27 – August 23, 2006) ratings survey, for example, the 6 pm Saturday “Noticias Univision 41” was seen by an average of 37,000 persons aged 18 top 34 (0.8/5 NSI rating/share), 81,000 persons aged 18 to 49 (0.9/5 NSI rating/share), and 81,000 persons aged 25 to 54 (0.9/5).  Spanish-language Telemundo’s WNJU Channel 47 and Disney-ABC’s WABC-TV Channel 7 tied for second place among those aged 18 to 34 with an average of 25,000 viewers in August 2006.  CBS-owned WCBS-TV Channel 2 placed second among New York viewers aged 18 to 49 and 25 to 54 with 65,000 and 71,000 viewers respectively.  Typically on a Saturday, the 6 pm “Noticias Univision 41” competes with local news programs on Telemundo, Fox, CBS, ABC, and NBC.  Remarkable though it may seem, the New York TV market is barely 20 percent Hispanic.  Two Spanish-language TV news programs compete for the 20 percent, while the remaining 80 percent is fought over by four English-language TV news programs.

“The TV ratings underscore the importance of Latinos in New York,” said WXTV General Manager Ramon J. Pineda.  “Ten years ago, Spanish-language TV barely figured in the overnight ratings.  Now it is number one.  In a world of declining English-language TV ratings, Spanish-language ratings continue to grow.”
